Every four days in the UK, a woman is killed by her partner or ex-partner – and in the past year, domestic abuse has become an epidemic.

For thirty years, Jane Monckton Smith has been fighting to change this. A former police officer and internationally renowned professor of public protection, she has developed her ground-breaking research into an eight-stage homicide timeline, laying out identifiable stages in which coercive relationships can escalate to violence and murder.

Drawing on disciplines including psychology, sociology and law, Monckton Smith talks to victims, their families and killers to piece together the hows and whys of abuse – while shining a searching light onto the society and media that allow it to thrive.

As a police officer who works in this area this book has revolutionized my understanding of control and abuse with tangible changes I will take away. I wish I had known this 15 years ago but feel excited and empowered to make a difference now with what I have learnt. My colleagues are now ploughing through this as well and they all agree that a tidal wave of change is coming based on our understanding of control from this work.

I thought I knew a lot about controlling relationships but there was much more insight and detail in this book. I was able to pin point the stage that I had reached with my own abuser - stage 5 - at which point I fortunately managed to get out. This book should he required reading for young adults - both to show them how to recognise abuse enacted on them and for them to recognise their own negative behaviour and be able to work on it.

Everyone should read this book.

This ought to be mandatory reading for every practitioner in the criminal justice system. Professor Jane Monkton Smith isnt simply an academic it's very clear that she has a deep understanding of the system and its flaws. I have given a copy of this book to my daughter to read.

A compelling examination of Domestic Abuse
