He’s my idol - it’s an amazing book .
His narration is well irritating though - stop trying to be so vocally entertaining- it’s hard to listen too

Amazing book - narration irritating though !

The information in this book is interesting and insightful. It can very much be summed up as "eat plants", but having it laid out in front of me has helped hammer the point home and listening to it in bits across the past few weeks (along with How Not To Die) has kept me on track as I assess my own diet and make some changes. It essentially focuses my thinking about my food intake and has made it easier to not give in to cravings for sugar and processed foods. I do most of my audiobook listening while out on a walk and I'd often drop into the shop as I walked past and buy some crisps or something. Now I just walk right by the shop, even if I do think for a second about how much I'd like some crisps. My diet is much better, I've virtually eliminated animal products, and I'm feeling so much better for it, as well as losing weight steadily. So, I rate the book very highly in that regard.

However, I was starting to wonder if I was going to lose my mind from listening to how he says "put it to the test" exactly the same way over and over and over. Sometimes, the tone and manner of reading is, to be really blunt, condescending, with scoffing like what the author is saying is just sooooo obvious and we, the reader, already know this information and we're sitting with the author laughing at people who haven't heard the news that plants are the healthiest thing you can eat and animal products are generally bad for you. Except, we aren't, since I'd say it's safe to assume most of the readers are the dummies being scoffed at who didn't know this (that's why we're reading, after all, is it not?). We, as readers, are often coming into the book hot off the heels of having our views changed via How Not To Die, but it's fairly safe to say most of us had skewed ideas about the relative healthiness of plants and animal products. So yeah, annoying in that regard. Or it's overly "performative". It's the sort of tone that makes more sense when you're listening to a recording of someone speaking to an audience - a TED talk, a live stream, something like that - where there may be small pauses for the audience reaction, moving across the stage, changing the slide on the screen, or such. But there is no such audience. It's the author speaking directly to you. It would be extremely dry listening if he dropped ALL of the intonation in his voice, don't get me wrong, but sometimes this attempt to sound somewhat casual causes him to slur words, suddenly speed through some words or phrases (which, when I listen to it on a slightly increased speed, can make it unintelligble) or fumble through words. It's also mildly infuriating when he reads out a very obviously alphabetised list of foods but puts a tone and variable cadence on it like he's thinking of it off the top of his head, but somehow magically remembering the names of berries in precisely alphabetical order like a savant.

I really strongly recommend this book for anyone looking to lose weight and eat more plant-based, but the only thing that stopped me from returning the book and just getting it as a physical book is the fact that I know I'd never finish it by the end of this year if it was physical, as I absorb information best through audio and my lifestyle isn't generally compatible with sitting down to read. So yeah, be warned. But if you're like me and strongly prefer audiobooks, it's worth powering through.

The performance is infuriating.

As with How not to die, loved it. Relayed with humour in Greger's inimitable style. Refreshing to hear dieting info that has been scientifically reviewed and hot air fluff for commercial gain. Everyone should listen to this. I do have a question though. if cold activates brown fat production, why does exercising in the cold (like swimmers), result in higher body fat??

Jam packed with great info. Great narration
