C.S. Forester
April 1803, and the Peace of Amiens is failing as Horatio Hornblower takes a three-master on a vital reconnaissance mission… On the day of his marriage to Maria, Hornblower is ordered to take the Hotspur and head for Brest – war is coming and Napoleon will not catch His Majesty’s navy with its britches round its ankles. With thoughts of his new life as a husband intruding on his duties, Hornblower must prove himself to be not only the most capable commander in the fleet, but also its most daring if he is to stop the French gaining the upper hand. This is the third of eleven books chronicling the adventures of C. S. Forester’s inimitable nautical hero, Horatio Hornblower.

“Midshipman Hornblower” and “Hornblower and the Hotspur” were revisited from my teens, and then accessed from the local library.
C.S. F must have been very astute, au fait with ships and sailing and with an impressive geographic knowledge as well as being an amateur historian. The material is possibly niche, but great entertainment if you enjoy it. Hornblower, the character is charming, with an honest and unpretentious introspection. .The narration is excellent for the guys but unimpressive for the women…. and one needs to tolerate and get by this.
Great story telling and easy listening

Even though the books are written wildly out of order, it’s not putting me off, just making admire the author even more.
Such brilliance of both writing and reading
