About this listen

If Gary had known he'd get trapped in an RPG with his real-life stats, he’d have tried harder in gym class.

Gary Burns just wanted to create the greatest RPG campaign of his gaming career. But a freak magical accident sucks him into the very world he created - as himself.

Surrounded by heroes who look and sound like his friends, Gary is forced to play out the story he wrote. Worthless in a fight, Gary must prove himself valuable even if it means feeding the team insider knowledge.

Because he needs to keep his friends close - and himself alive - until he can solve the puzzle he never designed: how to get everyone back home.

Homebrew puts the RPG into litRPG, taking the ever-growing gamelit genre back to its tabletop roots. If you miss the rattle of dice and gaming at a table with your friends, the Metagamer Chronicles are what you've been craving. Fans of Dungeons and Dragons and old TSR novels will love Homebrew.

This is a story of dungeons and dragons type characters interplaying and making progress against enemies, beasts and a baddie and a thief. The meta component arises because the dungeon master and game creator becomes embroiled in the story unintentionally. The tale is told from his point of view as he realises the others are fully immersed and don't remember their real-life situations. They are faced with moral choices as well as mortal (in the game) danger. I was interested in the creativity and these choices. Not full marks as those not completely into role playing games (RPG) are likely to be irritated by the flow being interrupted often by reviewing the character stats.
The narrator does a good job on voicing male, female and different races. Again the loss of full marks is due to the inconsistent Scottish accent given to one character.

Meta story of RPG with fantasy.

★★★★☆
This was a D&D campaign turned isekai, with the GM written in as an extra character. An amusing and clever concept. The sarcastic main character was a highlight, and I really enjoyed how he actively engaged with the plot and twisted it to suit his own ends rather than just going along for the ride. The story was fun and self-aware overall, though the ending felt a little weak compared to the rest of the book.
