About this listen

FEATURING AN EXCLUSIVE INTRODUCTION READ BY IAN RANKIN.

The 2nd Inspector Rebus novel from 'arguably Scotland's finest living writer' (The Times)

A junkie lies dead in an Edinburgh squat, spreadeagled, cross-like on the floor, between two burned-down candles, a five-pointed star daubed on the wall above.

Just another dead addict - until John Rebus begins to chip away at the indifference, treachery, deceit and sleaze that lurks behind the facade of the Edinburgh familiar to tourists. Only Rebus seems to care about a death which looks more like a murder every day, about a seductive danger he can almost taste, appealing to the darkest corners of his mind.

Well written, well narrated but, unfortunately, abridged. I would not have used a credit on the abridged version, if I had known. Audible could help by making it clear!!
There is an unabridged version narrated by James Macpherson, who reads equally well.

A friend recommended Ian Rankin to me. Certainly not disappointed. Looking forward to the next one

A gripping a sometimes funny book

hadn't realised this was abridged - my error but Audible could have helped make it clearer.

performance is fantastic and it's a great story but you can't help feeling you lose some of the tone and humour of Rankin's writing by the process of reduction/compaction.

lesson learned- still a good option for people with limited time.

Abridged which reduces score
