Summary

Healing the Shame That Binds You is the most enduring work of family relationship expert and New York Times best-selling author John Bradshaw. In it, he shows how unhealthy toxic shame, often learned young and maintained into adulthood, is the core component in our compulsions, co-dependencies, addictions and drive to superachieve. While positive shame empowers us and sustains the fabric of our social system, inappropriate or misdirected shame results in the breakdown of our self-esteem, the destruction of the family system, and an inability to move forward with our lives. In an honest and emotionally revealing style based largely on his personal experience with addiction and his decades as a counselor, John Bradshaw moves from the source and manifestation of toxic shame to the practical tools---affirmations, visualizations, inner voice and feeling work, guided meditations, and other healing techniques---that will release the shame that binds us to our past.

This is an excellent understanding of wounding, the trauma that arises as a result of these wounds & how individuals pattern thereafter in an attempt to function.

This is one of the best books I have read as a psychotherapist. I like that the book is formatted in small sections as it is easy to follow and allows the reader to go back and listen to specific parts again. Each chapter is packed with moments for reflections on one's own life whilst also giving deep insight into client's experiences of shame that may be playing out underneath their conscious awareness. This book has been transformational to my own shame healing journey and I am looking forward to reading John's other books once I've finished this for the second time!

Great book! It really helped put a lot of things I've been struggling with into perspective; give definitions to things I was dealing with.

The one problem I had was with the use of pronouns: instead of the use of 'they', 'he' and 'she' were used in the perpetuated gender roles within society.

Here's to a rebirth

John Bradshaw'd book is immense in its scope and depth, covering so many angles and facets relating to healthy shame and toxic shame. There is a gem on every page and anyone would benefit from listening to this.

My only comment is John narrates the book at a very fast pace and with little intonation, so I needed to stop/rewind very often to absorb the information.

A book of wisdom
