About this listen

Unearths the stories of the little-known but powerful elder women in European myth and folklore, inspiring listeners to radically reimagine the last decades of their lives as the most dynamic of all

Western folklore and mythology are rife with brilliantly creative, fulfilled, feisty, and furious role models for aging women, despite our culture's focus on youthfulness. In her exciting new book, mythologist and psychologist Sharon Blackie explores these archetypes, presenting them in a way sure to appeal to contemporary women. Drawing inspiration from these examples, women can reclaim midlife as a liberating, alchemical moment rich with possibility and their elder years as a path to dynamic power.

After menopause, women can expect to live another forty to fifty years, making this stage of life longer than childbearing years. As Blackie describes it, midlife is the threshold to decades of opportunity and profound transformation, a time to learn, flourish, and claim the desires and identities that are often limited during earlier life stages. This is a time for gaining new perspectives, challenging and evolving our belief systems, exploring our calling, uncovering meaning, and ultimately finding healing for our accumulated wounds.

This book came to me just at the right time. I'm 53, in the throws of peri-menopause, feeling and seeing the signs of things were not quite right with my life, then dealing with a 3rd heart attack and now having to look Death squarely in the face, feeling lost, not knowing who I am, or where I'm going now.
Sharon's words, stories, and insights brought me great comfort and a lot of a-ha moments of self-realisation.
A great listen, so much so, I'm going to read the book as I'm sure I have missed so much detail.
Highly recommend it.

Really love this book and it’s messages that any age or gender can find meaning here and have recommended it to my friends and colleagues whole-heartedly, as an essential remembering of truly natural roles and meaningful wisdom and wildness. I am thoroughly stepping into my Hagitude and will continue to refer to the book and stories recalled there.

Essential

I cannot tell you how much this book is helping feeling the connection i felt i lost with ageing with the world out there. However this gave me anchorage and honest felt wisdom. Narrated with profoundness and having never had anyone read stories to me as a child i felt cradled into a soft embrace of deeper understandings and compassion. So well written, personal and all encompassing..i will listen to it again, time and time AGAIN.

Thank you Sharon, I have travelled deep inside myself, accompanied by your beautifully scribed and presented work, 'Hagitude'.

A true companion for me

This book felt like a siren call to the soul. By a woman, about women, for women. And men who want to understand women.

I found this fascinating and beautiful.

At first I was slightly distracted - it’s unusual to hear someone who enunciates each syllable and word quite so clearly.

Then I just slipped into it and enjoyed the clarity.

Interesting chapters. To me it’s a book you read or listen to - but more importantly it’s one you feel.

I felt as if I was listening to someone who knew me. Someone who simply connects (with the land, and the people and things that live on it).

I’ll definitely read more and I recommend it.

Thank you Sharon for sharing so much. That was time well invested 🤗🙏

What a magnificent read
