About this listen

Completed by Robert Aickman in 1975, but never before published in the USA, Go Back at Once is a delicious, delirious comic fantasy about the joys and terrors experienced by two young women seeking to escape the degradations of our technological and conformist age by fleeing to a chaotic, poet-ruled utopia.

I couldn’t finish it. If I’d heard ‘Iddaly’ one more time I might have thrown my phone out of the car.

Questionable narration

I think the narrator is trying to sound “posh”; she merely sounds daft. She can’t act, she can’t modulate her voice to vary her accent or pitch. Nothing. Most characters sound identical, that is except one of the two main characters who is the focus of alternate chapters. For some reason that character sounds like a whiny quarter-witted 4 year old. In any case the narrator clearly doesn’t understand what she’s reading and just doesn’t get any of the humour. Read the book instead if you can.
