Summary

Two boys can't remember the last time they had a hug.

Meet Finlay. He's studying for his nursing degree at Glasgow University, against all the odds. But coming straight from care means he has no support network.

How can he write essays, find paid work, and NOT fall for the beautiful boy at uni, when he's struggling to even feed himself?

Meet Banjo. He's trying to settle in with his new foster family and finish high school. But he can't forget all that has happened, and his anger and fear keep boiling over.

How can he hold on to the one good person in his life, when his outbursts keep threatening his already uncertain future?

Can Finlay and Banjo let go of the past before it drags them under?

"Tenderness itself, a song to love and friendship." Andrew O'Hagan

"Stunning. Hopeful, heartbreaking and ultimately joyful." Simon James Green

I actually downloaded this title because I know the author’s mother in law to show support , but I was instantly hooked by the raw honesty of the writing. I listened to it in 3 sittings.

Banjo and Finlay were immediately believable characters and I found myself rooting for them both all the way. It’s an unapologetically gritty read, prepare to be totally consumed by the mirroring narratives of the two main characters.

I hope Margaret has more books in the pipeline, she’s immensely talented. Loved it!

One of the most authentic listens I’ve had so far!

It is difficult to do this book justice. A stunning, painful story exploring severe trauma and the soul-lifting, dazzling, healing beauty of friendship, love, 'family' and 'home'. Brilliantly narrated. The voices of the two protagonists are superb, the character arcs are deeply satisfying and the story feels mature. An incredible and deeply moving debut from a powerful new voice in Scottish fiction.

Something about the close mirroring of the two stories felt perhaps a tiny bit authorial, but that structure allows the story to build into something beautiful and glorious. It's the vulnerability and authenticity of the two main characters that really makes this a standout, memorable novel.

Outstanding - tender, heartbreaking, beautiful

Beautiful tapestry of the tribulations of life after care. The exploration of complex trauma, relationships and friendships is so well done.

Both narrators did an amazing job.
