About this listen

Raised and trained in seclusion at a secret fortress on the edge of the northern wilds of the Kingdom of Ashai, a young warrior called Rezkin is unexpectedly thrust into the outworld when a terrible battle destroys all that he knows.

With no understanding of his life’s purpose and armed with masterful weapons mysteriously bestowed upon him by a dead king, Rezkin must travel across Ashai to find the one man who may hold the clues to his very existence.

Determined to adhere to his last orders, Rezkin extends his protection to an unlikely assortment of individuals he meets along the way, often leading to humorous and poignant incidents.

As if pursuing an elite warrior across a kingdom, figuring out who he is and why everyone he knows is dead, and attempting to find these so-called friends and protect them is not enough, strange things are happening in the kingdom. New dangers begin to arise that threaten not only Rezkin and his friends, but possibly everyone in Ashai.

This is the first installment of an ongoing series. This book is intended for adult readers. It contains graphic violence, creative language, and sexual innuendo. This book does not contain explicit sexual content.

One of my new favourites. Brilliant performance from the narrator. Would highly recommend for any fan of the fantasy genre. Can not wait to start on book 2!

A fantastic book that has kept me entranced for many hours. A really original story with interesting characters and lots of dialogue. Nick Podehl’s narration is as always superb such that you forget that the story is being read by a single reader. Highly recommended.

Well crafted, exciting and believable

Interesting characters made life by impeccable voice acting. I really like the narrator's work on different voices.

Loved the story throughout the entire book. I found it extremely interesting how Rezkin interacted with a world that he had only learned about but had never actually lived in. It was especially interesting how he viewed something like taking over the thieves' guild like a whim, or a minor undertaking. while on the contrary any other person would have deemed it a major undertaking that would take weeks to attempt. I also found it extremely funny how you would here the different peoples point of view on Rezkin, and having them be so completely wrong, like when Frisha (Not sure if that is how her name is spelled) said that it was like there was no deceit or cunning in him. with this happening right after he conquered the criminal underworld of Justain, (Probably not spelled right either.) the irony of her words made me crack up.

A fantastic book

I wasn't really sure what to expect from this story, but I put my faith in the reviews and thought I'd give it a go. I'm so glad I did! This book was great to listen to - well paced, the narration was good, the characters understandable and believable... I was able to picture the people and surroundings far easier than most audiobooks which really added to my enjoyment. It was easy to listen to, and I could listen to it for 30 minutes or 2 hours, which is what I love in an audiobook - if I have to listen to it regularly for hours at a time to follow the story I get really frustrated and don't enjoy it.
Am already making headway in the next instalment, and have the rest of the series in my wish-list!

A surprise gem of a book!
