Merham is a well-ordered 50s seaside town - the kind of town where everyone knows their place (and those who don't are promptly put in it).

Lottie Swift is an evacuee who has grown up with the respectable Holden family and loves Merham. The Holden's daughter Celia, however, chafes against the constraints on the town and longs to escape....

Slow to begin with and I was unsure where it was going. Other reviewers had urged readers to stick with it and they were right to do so. A lovely story, beautifully read. Jojo is such a talented writer.

Beautifully written

A very ordinary story, annoying characters made more so by the narrator! She turned the main character Daisy into a whining child, another female character that is full of self doubt and angst, scared of confrontation and unable to assert herself. Constantly bursting into tears or stomping off in a tantrum. At least it helped me to sleep!! But a waste of my credit!!

annoying characters and narrator makes it worse!

Although this was a well acted and well written story; I was often asking myself who was who? The storyline was good but often had to rewind to try and sort out who was doing what and why. I would suggest that using several actors may have helped to prevent confusion. Judith Boyd did really well but , unfortunately, I may need to start again....

Complicated plot

I found this so easy to emerse myself in right from the beginning. Good narration and characters. A love story from the 30's to present day, which kept me pleasantly entertained throughout. This is my second JoJo Moyes book and I shall definitely read more.

Enjoyable read
