Two young women in a land shattered by war test the limits of their strength

Lovely Julia Hoffman has always enjoyed the carefree life of her well-to-do Philadelphia family. But when she fails to attract the attention of Nathaniel Greene, a fierce abolitionist, she shocks her family by becoming a Union nurse.

Will that be enough to win Nathaniel's heart?

Phoebe Bigelow, from western Virginia, has always been a misfit, and when her brothers join the Union army, she also enlists—under false pretenses.

Soon, both have their eyes opened to the realities of war and suffering. Neither is quite ready for the demands of her new life, but their journeys of sacrifice and love are sure to change them in unexpected ways.

Really enjoyed this book. It was my first book by this author and I was not disappointed. It had everything ~ drama, courage, sacrifice, hard choices, love and so much emotion. I loved the characters and the way they matured through the book. The descriptions of the battles totally transported me to that moment in time. An excellent narrator just finished off this book perfectly for me.

Great book!

So enjoyed listening to this wonderful story. Didn’t want it to end. Full of history, drama, romance.

Loved this book!

So between Julia and Caroline, I personally felt that Julia was the more interesting character because she is far more flawed. She is more Scarlet O'Hara then Melenie. Yet at the same time the book does offer salvation, even as it shows that she is still flawed and hasn't become a saint at the end. She is still someone who can be weak, can be lead, but also has great flashes of fortitude. By contrast Caroline, though a spy was always a saint and self-righteous. I also am absolutely in love with Dr McGrath. Phoebe and Ted's parallel story was sweet, though I wish it ended differently. I found these books inspirational without being preachy.

I really enjoyed this series. beautiful and inspiring.
