Lucas Mayfield, the Eighth Earl of Heightford, couldn’t be more pleased with the private club that is his brainchild. But when a young courtesan at the club’s masquerade appears far too innocent, his suspicions are raised - along with his interest...until her gleaming hair tumbles down and he recognizes her as the Duke of Chatterwood’s beautiful daughter. How did the minx even know the place existed? And how has he allowed himself to give in to temptation and kiss her? Even more perplexing is this: she has vowed the kiss won’t be the last.

Liliah Durary’s father has cruelly demanded she marry her best friend, Meyer, although no romantic feeling exists between them. In fact, Meyer and Liliah’s other best friend, Rebecca, are truly in love. Liliah sees only one option: she and Meyer will maintain a platonic marriage until some other arrangement can be made. Still, she intends to experience pleasure before she is wed. An intriguing new club seems the perfect place - and when Lucas Mayfield kisses her, he seems the perfect other arrangement she seeks. All Liliah has to do is convince him.

This book was an unexpected surprise, all the characters are loveable, the story is believable, and the narrator voice tolerable. I do enjoyed the first installment, that I am off see what the Scotsman is up to with his ward.

Great find

I enjoyed this romance from an author I’ve not listened to previously - interesting characters, not boring, narrator easy to listen to. I hope the author, who has obviously written other books set in the regency era, has since managed to look up primogeniture, since this is the cause of a key plot error in this book, and a fundamental thing to know about if you are writing about the English peerage. No peer has the power to deny his rightful heir. As most of his estate would be entailed, current Earl wouldn’t even be able to deny him that. An Act of Parliament may have managed the denial, but on what grounds? The threat made was therefore not possible. This careless lack of very basic research aside, the rest of the book is worth a listen.

Decent romance with glaring plot error
