Summary

A Space Marine Battles Audiobook

When the mechanical legions of the necrons awaken beneath a quaking Imperial world, only the Ultramarines can save its citizens from extermination.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

It's a key piece of Ultramarines lore and a deep insight into both the necrons and the character of Cato Sicarius.

THE STORY

When the world of Damnos is hit by cataclysmic earthquakes, an ancient force is awakened. Deep beneath the earth, the necrons rise from their slumber to decimate the human populace. All appears lost until salvation comes from the heavens – the Ultramarines brave an orbital bombardment to deploy their forces on Damnos, led by two legendary warriors – Captain Cato Sicarius and Chief Librarian Tigurius.

These warriors are the planet's last, great hope against the remorseless alien foes, but tensions within their ranks threaten to derail victory. As battle rages on Damnos, and the Ultramarines seek to defeat their soulless enemies, Tigurius receives a terrible vision – a vision telling of the death of a hero...

I can't quite understand why I struggled with this one, I felt my difficulty getting through it was akin to the attrition between the space marines and the necrons. I think it adds some great lore however, and I'm keen to hear what answers the sequel has to offer.

Overall not one of my favourites.

A bit of a slogg to get through

Decent story and performance, mostly action story with a lot of characters. Only real problem is the ending that kind lives it feeling unfinished.

Good all arounder but not mind blowing.

Ultramarines do not say ‘God-Emperor’ surely ? Really good battle story, superbly narrated with really good voice acting of the Necrons.

The narration was top class!

just a book about Ultramarines killing Necrons. No character development, no insight into the Ultramarines' background or lore except some very, very high level politicking between companies. very high level insight into Necron squabbling amongst lords and crypteks of a dynasty. No interesting story or twist whatsoever. only interesting lore was the descent into madness that flayed ones and destroyers go through from the Necron perspective. In my opinion definitely not worth the book for that aspect only though.
