'If great books encourage you to look at the world in an entirely new way, then Dominion is a very great book indeed . . . Written with terrific learning, enthusiasm and good humour, Holland's book is not just supremely provocative, but often very funny' Sunday Times History Book of the Year

Christianity is the most enduring and influential legacy of the ancient world, and its emergence the single most transformative development in Western history. Even the increasing number in the West today who have abandoned the faith of their forebears, and dismiss all religion as pointless superstition, remain recognisably its heirs. Seen close-up, the division between a sceptic and a believer may seem unbridgeable. Widen the focus, though, and Christianity's enduring impact upon the West can be seen in the emergence of much that has traditionally been cast as its nemesis: in science, in secularism, and yes, even in atheism.

That is why Dominion will place the story of how we came to be what we are, and how we think the way that we do, in the broadest historical context. Ranging in time from the Persian invasion of Greece in 480 BC to the on-going migration crisis in Europe today, and from Nebuchadnezzar to the Beatles, it will explore just what it was that made Christianity so revolutionary and disruptive; how completely it came to saturate the mind-set of Latin Christendom; and why, in a West that has become increasingly doubtful of religion's claims, so many of its instincts remain irredeemably Christian. The aim is twofold: to make the listener appreciate just how novel and uncanny were Christian teachings when they first appeared in the world; and to make ourselves, and all that we take for granted, appear similarly strange in consequence. We stand at the end-point of an extraordinary transformation in the understanding of what it is to be human: one that can only be fully appreciated by tracing the arc of its parabola over millennia.

In first read Tom Holland’s Rubicon and thoroughly enjoyed it. This book, I expected to be more personally educational to me and I wasn’t wrong. For anyone interested in history, this is a great listen that will take you from the ancient Middle East, to modern times and covers everything from the slave trade to the Lord of the Rings and the Beetles.

Another great book

I found this book immensely rich in historical stories that ranged across ancient eras I have, despite a burgeoning fascination, hitherto struggled to access. But it's not just a history book about kings and conquests because the thread running through it is the story of the part played by religion, that is to say, Christianity, explained and revisited, respectfully but unflinchingly. Tom is so good at illustrating context so that events become comprehensible. His ultimate thesis, it seems to me, is deeply investigated and brilliantly intelligent. This is a book you can really get your teeth into.

Tom's sharp mind, exquisite articulacy and originality of thought

I read the ebook version of this for the first 80%, only to decide I would need to re-read the whole thing and audio would be better for that purpose. I'm so delighted I got the audio as well, the book becomes so much more alive when read by Tom Holland

This book makes history and easy to follow fascinating story and contains great insights. The latter part of the book draws on the episodes and people covered in the earlier part of the book. Tom Holland brings to the forefront all the assumptions we hold without realising and points out where these assumptions come from, even from sides that are apparently at loggerheads, each holding assumptions that have their roots in Christendom.

Fantastic - Wonderful to hear Tom Holland Read this himself

At a time when cultural wars, spiritual bankruptcy, and moral darkness seem rampant Tom Holland’s work in this book has drawn a beautiful thread through history, politics, revolution and theology.

Written and performed so well, this is such a critical book for understanding where we stand today as a people and society in the western world. - wether christian or not, the assumptions of the agnostic humanist moral order are left unmoored and wanting without the context laid out within this book.

If the living stewards of these traditions are to keep us from stumbling backwards into the orders of the old world, or tyrannies of the future, its in ‘Dominion’ where we can gain new clarity and begin to step out of the shadows once again.

Paradigm shifting
