DC Gary Goodhew is intelligent, intuitive, and the youngest detective at Cambridge's Parkside Station. He is the first on the scene when the body of a young woman is discovered on Midsummer Common and for the first time in his career is given the chance to work on a murder investigation.

Soon there is an identity for the victim: Lorna Spence. Richard Moran, her boyfriend and employer, has reported her missing and is distraught to discover that she has been killed. He claims she was loved by his staff and his sisters, reserved Alice and vulnerable Jackie. He says she had no enemies but it isn't long before Goodhew discovers plenty, including her high maintenance colleague Victoria and Goodhew's reckless former classmate Bryn. They both swear that they have nothing to do with Lorna's death but Goodhew knows someone is lying.

Then there is another brutal murder and Goodhew knows it is time to use his own initiative to flush out the killer, even though it means risking his job and discovering the truth about the one person he hopes will be innocent.

I love finding a new author, especially one with a ńew twist on the detectives.

Well worth listening to/reading!

Good listen (apart from the narrator not being pulled up on a couple of really annoying pronuncitions - a loose box isn't a box that has become loose... ). As another reviewer has said, it'll be fun watching how the Goodhew character develops. Will definitely keep an eye out for the next in the series

Will listen to the next one

A beautifully descriptive wander through Cambridge and a complex mystery . l had to listen to the ending twice to make sure that I understand who had done what and when as there were several characters to hang onto. Now looking forward to the next one.

An excellent Cambridge murder mystery.

As a resident of Cambridge it was nice to be able to relate to places I know. I liked the story but found the narrator hard to like. I carried on with it for the story but thing different narrator could have made it more enjoyable

Good story not keen on narrator

It was an enjoyable listen, with credible characters, a likeable main character and an initially engaging story. Beware though, full concentration is demanded to have any hope of untangling this tale.
The narration is very good, only let down sometimes by the lack of a clear distinction between certain characters, particularly female, hence the requirement for your full attention.
I'm afraid that I did lose the plot towards the end, ploughing on without a clear understanding of the implications of various items of evidence, which thankfully were explained as the story reached its finale. Obviously this lessens the enjoyment somewhat though. Nonetheless, well worth a listen and I'm interested in listening to the next in the series.

Concentrate! You're doomed otherwise
