Sometimes you don't want a deeply meaningful treatise on the meaning of human existence. Sometimes you want spaceships with big guns, captained by a flawed character willing to charge into certain death with implacable aliens.

The science is well done, the action is tense and exciting, and all the characters are fleshed out enough to be believable.
