I love how Glynn is shining a much needed light on overlooked heroes of times past (we’re going back to the 1800s here). I thoroughly enjoyed K.T. Glynn’s past release on Sophie Scholl and the White Rose (The Silent Defiance) and so, naturally, I was excited to dive into this next installment about Harriet Forten Purvis, who not only stood in integrity for her cause but also displayed an immense amount of inspirational leadership in doing so–something that many of us in this day and age can learn from. A huge part of these titles I enjoy is simply educating myself on parts of history that have simply not been brought to the forefront as much as they deserve and that need to have their stories told. Not only did Harriet bring about groups that worked to abolish unethical wrongs of the time, but stood as a strong voice wrapped in courage.

I picked this up because I was tired of the same stories in every history book and I’m so glad I did. I’d never even heard of this woman before, but her story completely pulled me in. It made me realize how much we’re missing when we only focus on the usual names. It’s powerful, real, and gave me a whole new appreciation for the people who fought for freedom behind the scenes. Absolutely worth the read.
