About this listen
The Bethlem hospital for the mentally insane has existed since the year 1244.
Originally an alms house for Holy Land Crusaders, it became a dumping ground for the incurably insane. The bestial care became public entertainment in the Victorian era, conditions so horrendous that it earned the nickname of ‘Bedlam’.
