Who was Andrija Puharich - and why does his name appear at the beginning of the MKUltra story?

As Congress once again examines the history and legacy of the CIA's Mind Control Program, MKUltra, understanding where the program began has never been more important. While recent hearings have renewed public interest, many of the earliest chapters remain largely absent from the conversation.

In this episode of Archive Hour, I examine rarely seen correspondence, personal journals, and archival documents that reveal Andrija Puharich's direct involvement during the earliest years of government research into hypnosis, consciousness, ESP, and mind-control.

Long before MKUltra became public knowledge, Puharich was conducting experiments that overlapped with many of the same people, institutions, and ideas that would later become part of the CIA's most infamous program. His papers also suggest that, in later years, he became one of its earliest critics - leaving behind documents that read more like a whistleblower's archive than a participant's.

Together, these letters and journal entries help piece together a chapter of MKUltra history that has remained largely overlooked - and provide important historical context to many of the questions now being raised in Washington.
