Iedereen kan er naartoe.Haha, yes, definitely. Well, a community center is a place for all residents from the neighborhood. Everyone can go there.Bram: Oké, en wat voor dingen gebeuren er dan? Wat voor activiteit is er te doen?Okay, and what kind of things happen there? What kind of activities are there to do?Mieke: Van alles. Er is vaak een koffieochtend voor ouderen, of een knutselmiddag voor kinderen. Soms zijn er ook taallessen, of yogalessen. Het hangt echt af van de buurt.All sorts of things. There's often a coffee morning for seniors, or a craft afternoon for children. Sometimes there are also language classes, or yoga classes. It really depends on the neighborhood.Bram: Dus het is een beetje een clubhuis voor de wijk? Zoiets?So it's a bit like a clubhouse for the neighborhood? Something like that?Mieke: Ja, zo kun je het zien. Veel activiteiten worden georganiseerd door een vrijwilliger.Yes, you could see it that way. Many activities are organized by a volunteer.Bram: Een vrijwilliger, wat is dat ook alweer?A volunteer, what was that again?Mieke: Dat is iemand die het werk doet zonder ervoor betaald te worden, gewoon omdat hij of zij het leuk vindt om de buurt te helpen.That's someone who does the work without getting paid for it, simply because he or she enjoys helping the neighborhood.Bram: Ah, juist. Ik herinner me van vroeger dat er naast ons buurthuis een grote speeltuin was. Daar was ik als kind altijd te vinden.Ah, right. I remember from back then that there was a big playground next to our community center. I was always there as a child.Mieke: Precies! Een speeltuin hoort er vaak bij. Het idee is dat mensen elkaar ontmoeten. Als ouders bij de speeltuin staan, praten ze met elkaar. Dat is goed voor de sociale cohesie.Exactly! A playground often belongs with it. The idea is that people meet each other. When parents are at the playground, they talk to each other. That's good for social cohesion.Bram: Sociale cohesie... wacht even, dat klinkt wel heel officieel.Social cohesion... wait a minute, that sounds very official.Mieke: Dat valt wel mee. Het betekent gewoon dat mensen in een buurt zich met elkaar verbonden voelen. Dat ze elkaar kennen en een beetje helpen als dat nodig is.It's not that bad. It just means that people in a neighborhood feel connected to each other. That they know each other and help each other a bit if needed.Bram: Oké, duidelijk. En wie betaalt dat allemaal? Is such a community center owned by the municipality?Mieke: Vaak krijgt het buurthuis geld van de gemeente, subsidie heet dat. Maar de organisatie is meestal een stichting. En ze zijn dus heel afhankelijk van de bewoners die meehelpen.Often the community center receives money from the municipality, that's called a subsidy. But the organization is usually a foundation.
