Growing up near Playa del Rey in Los Angeles, Wendy remembers one sound more clearly than almost anything else from her childhood: the rumble of trains passing near the house late at night.

The tracks weren’t directly behind the property, but they were close enough that she could hear the trains clearly from her bedroom. Far from frightening her, the sound became comforting—a familiar part of falling asleep nearly every night growing up.
