The vampire world is in crisis – their kind have been proliferating out of control and, thanks to technologies undreamed of in previous centuries, they can communicate as never before. Roused from their earth-bound slumber, ancient ones are in thrall to the Voice: which commands that they burn fledgling vampires in cities from Paris to Mumbai, Hong Kong to Kyoto and San Francisco. Immolations, huge massacres, have commenced all over the world.

Who – or what – is the Voice? What does it desire, and why?

There is only one vampire, only one blood drinker, truly known to the entire world of the Undead. Will the dazzling hero-wanderer, the dangerous rebel-outlaw Lestat heed the call to unite the Children of Darkness as they face this new twilight?

Anne Rice’s epic, luxuriant, fiercely ambitious new novel brings together all the worlds and beings of the legendary Vampire Chronicles, from present-day New York and Ancient Egypt to fourth-century Carthage and Renaissance Venice; from Louis de Pointe du Lac; Armand the eternally young; Mekare and Maharet; to Pandora and Flavius; David Talbot, vampire and ultimate fixer from the Secret Talamasca; and Marius, the true child of the Millennia. It also introduces many other seductive supernatural creatures, and heralds significant new blood.

Critic reviews

Rice is a superb storyteller with a fabulously rich imagination, and such ringing authority of tone that you’ll believe vampires really exist. (Kate Saunders)
Few contemporary American or British novelists have had as much cultural impact over the past four decades as Anne Rice
Rice is a charismatic and passionate storyteller (Alexandra Heminsley)
Anne is back with a bang
Sappy, vegetarian Edward Cullen lacks teeth compared to Rice's dastardly Lestat. Put it this way: Meyer is vampire-lite; Rice serves up no-holds barred in delicious, full-fat glory (Susan Swarbrick)
The Queen of modern vampire fiction
Distinctive lyricism... clever, well plotted and engaging
Beautiful writing (Jonathan Wright)
Anne Rice creates a revolution or sorts in the book that will hopefully lead to new installments of the Vampire Chronicles, the path for this is now wide open and I for one look forward to what comes next (5 stars)
This is a welcome return to the luxurious, elegant world of these bloodsuckers, and Rice proves she’s still more than capable of biting wit and some gruesome horror (Jonathan Hatfull)

I must admit by end of the original run of vampire chronicles I was getting a bit disappointed by the hybrid of Mayfair witches and vampire books . they didn't seem to meet my expectations as I had loved both series of books. This book has brought back the series with a great story. The mix of prospects from the all the vampires can get a little confusing but it is part of the reason I do like the books you see things from not just one view. I can't wait for more.

I've finally gotten to it! After having the book in my possession from when it first came out in 2013, its taken another fan's review of it and the wonderful audio narration of Simon Vance to convince me to give it a try.
And I'm glad I did!!!
All the old favourites are back, new, interesting and exciting characters introduced. A good plot that kept me interested all the time, and the oh so wonderful Lestat in all his glory.

Yes, I can definitely feel the difference in style and atmosphere of Anne Rice's writing, but the original feel of The Vampire Lestat is there, and I can't wait to see where the story takes this further.

A new favourite of mine is Antoine, and his desperate search for companionship made me really tear up.

Thank you! Now off to the next book.

Everything you want from a comeback!

Simon Vance brings the characters to life(undeath)in this novel,I have read them all up until "Prince Lestat" so I think I'll maybe start at the beginning and listen to them, love the storyline.

Would you recommend Prince Lestat to your friends? Why or why not?

I would recommend Prince Lestat to any fan of The Vampire Chronicles, but I don't think a non-fan would rate it at all.

Which character – as performed by Simon Vance – was your favourite?

Simon Vance is a great reader, I love his range of voices even though his Asian characters all sound like the shopkeeper from The Simpsons. The rest of his repertoire is fantastic as always.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Unlike Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the damned; I don't think I could do this audiobook in one sitting, I found my mind wandering and getting a little bored if I am to be honest.

Any additional comments?

The story is progressing ponderously, their is an awful lot of padding and going over old ground, it's like the author had a great idea and then was not quite sure where to go with it. I write this having not finished the book yet, I think I've

Not the best Anne Rice I've read
