Critic reviews

“Christopher Timothy played James Herriot in the beloved BBC series "All Creatures Great and Small." Here Timothy reprises his role as the young country vet in this third collection of Herriot stories....Sit back with a cup of tea as Timothy tells you funny, gentle and occassionally sad tales about characters such as local farmers with broad accents; the posh Mrs. Pomphrey, whose overfed Poermanian passes gas; and the Ministry of Agriculture officials, who rake James over the coals for inept form-filling. Timothy develops countless individual voices with different class accents, and all are perfect.” —AudioFile

“... humor, realism, sensitivity, earthiness... gentle compassion and a lively sense of the sad, the ridiculous, and the admirable.” —Columbus Dispatch

Christopher Timothy bring this book alive with his great narration. These stories are like an old friend as you meet the familiar people and places. A great read.

Brilliant as always

Enjoyed the stories, but, yet again, unsubtle and intrusive use of music - please give us the well-loved music to go with the well-loved stories - and more sympathetic use of it!

Good book spoiled by music

Christopher Timothy, the actor who portrayed legendary vet James Herriot in the original 1970s TV series "All Creatures Great And Small", clearly understands the characters in the books extremely well, and his narration brings them all to life. Sometimes, his accents could be better – but that's just splitting hairs.

These books are all well worth a listen, and Christopher's narration brings the stories to us in a unique and powerful way. There are other offerings narrated by other readers – but none of them come close to Christopher's consistently high standard of performance.

Until I found these books on Audible, I had been hunting for the original series on DVD – not the Channel Five series from last year – so far, without success. However, my searches have been far less intense since I discovered the books.

Even those who have never tapped into the series before would, especially if they listened to all of the books in the correct sequence, soon find themselves enthralled.

All Creatures Great And Small, All Things Bright And Beautiful, All Things Wise And Wonderful, Every Living Thing, The Lord God Made Them All, It Shouldn't Happen To A Vet, If only They Could Talk, along with a number of other spin-offs, an intense insight into the farming communities of North Yorkshire, the characters surrounding James Herriot and the animals he encountered (great and small).

I thoroughly recommend these books to anybody, regardless of age, gender or nationality. Five out of five for performance and content. A great compilation of books.

The Third Book In An Excellent Series

Beautifully read by Christopher Timothy. I loved the way James Herriot weaved his war experiences in the RAF with his stories of being a vet. I would highly recommend this, as I would all the James Herriot books narrated by Christopher Timothy. It's best to follow the order they were published in to get the full effect.
