About this listen

Alistair Cooke was the greatest of all twentieth century reporters of life in America to the rest of the world. This book presents the cream of his writings on the events that shaped modern American history, from the end of the Second World War through to the assassination of John Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy (Cooke was actually present), the moon landings and the Monica Lewinsky scandal. Almost all the material will be new to Cooke fans – transcripts of his legendary Letters from America, long-forgotten reports in the Guardian (whose correspondent in New York he was for 25 years) and other freshly discovered writings.

This will be short review as a huge fan of Mr Cooke for decades. I can only wholly recommend this audio package wither a fan or an unknown person of Alistair Cookes work.. The presentation of the audio is incredibly good & along with the wonderful insite by Alistair's daughter of her father's & his family life is remarkable.
The information and reporting over a period of 50 years of American life and history is both educational as well as fascinating... Well worth listening too...

Rivetingly interesting,.

The choice of material to include from the huge legacy of Alistair Cooks written legacy is excellent, giving the listener an absorbing insight to 6 tumultuous decades of American history from the 1940s into the early years of the 21st century. The narration is perfect and the participation of Cook’s daughter provides a touching awareness of the personality of this amazing man.
