Acquisition mode in this book refers to praying with an expectation of gaining something for yourself or the one for which you intercede. In this mode, our focus is to optimize this life. This mode can show “cracks” in our faith because it reveals a lack in belief God’s sovereignty His plan for the ages.
These prayers reflect what we have all been taught. If we want something, we just need to ask God to hear our request wait for the blessing we’ve requested to come. In other words, “Not Thy will but my will be Done.” We are taught, from very young, that good works and behavior are the only way to blessings. From Santa Clause to the Easter Bunny and finally with God, we are taught that the giver of gifts responds only to good boys and girls. If we don’t ask for it, we may not get it. If we do ask for it and we do not behave, we are likely to get lumps of coal rather that then what we asked.
The more relevant question is: How do I develop a habit of talking to God that results in prayers that align me with God? I’m seeking to “double-click” down on this question and discuss methods of transforming our prayers from “give me” requests to “change me”. Instead of simply going through a wish-list of things we need, we can have a discussion with God that can change the way we think.
