Chris C. Penman is a Chartered Structural Engineer and Chartered Civil Engineer with more than 25 years of industry experience. After spending 12 years working for major multinational consultancies, he founded his own engineering and architectural practice in 2006 and has since built a diverse group of specialist businesses. Over the course of his career, Chris' work has included anti-terror measures and bullet-resistant glazing for the Scottish Parliament, as well as the Smáralind Shopping Centre in Iceland—a building that later achieved an unexpected kind of fame when it appeared in FHM magazine because of its rather distinctive shape. Chris currently operates three engineering consultancies. One specialises in structural glass, curtain walling, and bullet- and blast-resistant design. Another focuses on residential engineering, from single-storey extensions to small housing developments. His third provides rapid assistance to homeowners dealing with unauthorised building work, missing building warrants and properties that cannot be sold or mortgaged until compliance issues are resolved. He also owns Attic Beams Ltd, a steelwork manufacturing company producing specialist beams designed to strengthen attic floors before loft conversions. As an author, Chris writes about subjects he knows from professional practice and personal experience. His books cover engineering, architecture, building regulations, home improvement, environmental issues, wealth creation, role-playing games, carp fishing and cultural commentary. Whether he is explaining a complex technical subject, challenging conventional thinking or helping readers avoid expensive mistakes, Chris aims to make specialist knowledge practical, accessible and entertaining.
