I’ve read several of Leigh Rivers’ books, and I have to say: I LOVED this one. As a huge fantasy fan, I came to dark romance after years of devouring fantasy and dark fantasy, and Leigh Rivers has quickly become one of my go-to authors. I adored her Edge of Darkness series, so when I spotted Satanic Shadows, I jumped right in and I’m so glad I did.
The Story
Seraphine Winters once lived a normal, human life, one she desperately misses after being kidnapped and forced onto a remote island. Her new reality? Quarrierton Academy: a castle full of immortal beings, where her only way out is to pass every class.
But as a powerless human surrounded by magic, Sera is hated just for existing. No one despises mortals more than Dane Dalton, the Shadow Prince. He loathes her presence… yet their lives are entangled by secrets, curses, and a dangerous pull neither of them can resist.

Why I Loved It
If you enjoyed Fourth Wing or On Wings of Blood, this will be right up your street. It’s packed with magic, castles, supernatural intrigue, and a compelling plot that’s impossible to put down. I devoured it in less than 24 hours.
What makes this book stand out from other academy-style fantasies is its unique twist and beautiful writing. Leigh Rivers wastes no time pulling you into the action, there’s a steady flow of plot, drama, and revelations that kept me hooked. Every chapter added something new, with enough twists to keep me guessing, all while laying the groundwork for book two.
Dane is an older, brooding, bullying type of hero whose possessive streak is both infuriating and addictive. Sera, at twenty, might appear powerless, but her journey reveals much more about who she is and why she and Dane are drawn together.
The chemistry between them is tense, full of desire, and built on layers of connection that makes their relationship impossible to look away from. When it comes to spice, I’d give this book a solid 3 out of 5 chillies, there's no wall-to-wall steam, but every scene is intense, meaningful, and perfectly placed to heighten the tension.
The pacing felt spot-on: fast, gripping, and setting up the next book beautifully. Honestly, I’m desperate for book two (no idea when it’s coming!) and already planning a re-listen.

Audiobook
The narration by M. K. Blackwood was phenomenal. I usually prefer dual narration in romance/fantasy, but their performance was so strong that I was completely swept away by the story. Perfect casting. My rating for the audiobook narration: 5/5 stars.
Final Thoughts
This book is dark, addictive, and magical, a perfect blend of academy fantasy, supernatural danger, passionate romance, and sizzling spice. Leigh Rivers has crafted something special here, and I cannot wait for the next instalment in The Broken Realms series.
I would recommend it. Yes, I’d definitely listen to it again.

Oh wow! What a story. Reminded me a bit of Bloodwing and Fourth Wing but with the spark and excellence of Leigh Rivers. I’ve read all her books and wasn’t sure what to expect with Satanic Shadows - i was blown away! The yearning, the tension - chefs Kiss!😘 this is the only other book to make me fall in love with a blond MMC!❤️ the story kept me on the edge of my seat dying to know more - and that ending!? I want book 2 NOW🤣. EXCELLENT book! narration was spot on for a single person (having a male for dual narration would have made it even better - for book 2 perhaps?)

When I saw that Leigh Rivers had done a fantasy book I had to get it but I never imagined I'd enjoy it as much as I did, hooked from the start! so many secrets and the anticipation of finding out what the heck is going on or has gone on had me on the edge of my seat, the banter and tension between Sera and Dane was great and the spice was 🔥🥵 the little glimpses of sweet Dane stole my heart but then he also has shadow Daddy, burn the world down, touch her and d!e vibes, what's not to like, the only thing I'm gutted about is that book 2 isn't out yet,

So usually I avoid books with just narration all th way through but I’m a huge fan of Leigh Rivers and decided to take the plunge on this one and I’m so glad I did! There is banter, chemistry, mystery and magic thrown in I loved it and finished the whole thing a day can’t wait for more in the series I’m hooked
